From the Himalayas to Raleigh: Yak&Brew Blends Ancient Brews With Modern Acts of Kindness

In Raleigh, North Carolina, a small startup with a big heart is brewing more than just drinks — it’s brewing kindness.

Yak&Brew, founded by Dawa Lama, a native of the Himalayas, has introduced something completely new to U.S. audiences: DIY fermentation kits for Tongba and Chhaang, traditional Himalayan brews that have been shared among families and communities for centuries.

But Yak&Brew isn’t just about sipping history from your kitchen counter. At its core, the brand is about connection, generosity, and keeping traditions alive. That’s why alongside its kits, the company has launched the #YakAndBrewChallenge, a global call to action that encourages people to carry out simple acts of kindness and share them online.

The idea is simple: do something genuine for someone else — walk a shelter dog, buy flowers for a friend, visit a neighbor — and then post about it on X (Twitter) with the hashtag #YakAndBrewChallenge. No filters or glossy edits required; in fact, the company insists that authenticity is what matters most.

“There’s a saying back home that a brew tastes better when it’s shared,” Lama explains. “We wanted to bring that same spirit of togetherness into this campaign. Acts of kindness, like sharing a brew, ripple outwards.”

And there are rewards too. The top posts with the most likes will earn beautifully handcrafted Tongba vessels and Yak&Brew kits, while every participant receives a 25% discount at launch. But Lama says the real prize is seeing kindness spread from one community to another.

Yak&Brew hopes to stand out not just because its drinks are unique — Tongba and Chhaang have never been introduced in this way to American homes — but because its mission runs deeper than novelty. The brewing process itself is hands-on, fun, and a natural conversation starter. Pair that with a challenge built on generosity, and suddenly a centuries-old tradition feels fresh and meaningful.

For Yak&Brew, brewing isn’t just about flavor. It’s about heritage, storytelling, and the small gestures that make people feel connected. “We want every sip to remind people of kindness — both given and received,” Lama says with a smile.

The challenge is now live, with participants joining from around the world. And just like the brews themselves, it’s an experience meant to be shared.
