Banana Republic of Pakistan: Military-Backed Anti-Terrorism Court Sentences 166 Members of Imran Khan’s PTI to 10-Year Jail Term

The judicial system in Pakistan has totally collapsed. In a similar bizarre case, an anti-terrorism court in Faisalabad handed a 10-year jail term to 166 members of Imran Khan’s party, Tehreek-e-Insaf.

The sentence came in connection with the May 9, 2023 attack on the ISI building and other military installations in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Nearly 166 members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, including law makers, were handed a 10-year jail term. This decision came just a week before the proposed call of the ”Free Imran Khan Movement.”

After the anti-terrorism court delivered the verdict, the Tehreek-e-Insaf strongly criticized the decision and condemned the verdict. The opposition leaders in the Punjab Assembly and National Assembly were also handed a 10-year jail term.

As the ‘Free Imran Khan’ movement is starting from August 05, this surprising decision of the anti-terrorism court has sent shockwaves across the country. The party supporters and workers have strongly condemned the verdict.

In May 2023, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was protesting across the country, which turned violent and triggered the attack on military installations and key military centres. After this, the military-backed government, while sailing the same track under the influence of military support, registered cases against the party workers.

Imran Khan — the party head — has openly stated that Pakistani military general “Asim Munir” is behind all the mess and has denied bowing to the dictatorship of the powerful military general.

Pakistan has nearly become the “Banana Republic of Pakistan,” where even honourable judges of the apex court have hinted at military involvement and oppression to get favourable verdicts.

Six judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan have also complained about military pressure in obtaining favourable decisions.

Though these accused party workers could avail legal remedies, the decision is unfortunate and reflects the exact match to the 142nd rank of Pakistan across the globe.

After the 26th Amendment, courts now have no power — they act as mute spectators, as favourable judges have been transferred or promoted to the special constitutional court, which oversees constitutional cases. Those who were opposing now stand as “mute spectators.” However, these judges themselves are responsible, as they gave constitutional cover or helped provide it, and are now helpless.

Even when the decision of the top court regarding the 90-day election was not implemented by the military-backed government, how could the powerful military leave space open for the judiciary?

Let’s make it further clear — Khawaja Asif, the Defence Minister of Pakistan, openly accepted the “nurturing of terrorists” and the “hybrid system” in Pakistan.

That country, where the name is derived as Islami Jamhoriya Pakistan, has turned into “Fouji Jamhooriya Pakistan.” The Islamic concepts of respect and dignity find no place, and the politicians currently ruling — and even those backtracking — have no legitimacy, being labelled as the Form 47 Government of Pakistan.

Several journalists have left the country — Imran Riaz Khan, Waqar Malik, etc. Arshad Malik — a top-rated journalist — was killed for exposing the assets of military generals. Similar things happen in Balochistan and KPK, where opposing individuals are picked up by the military and labelled as ‘Missing People.’

A report published by Human Rights Watch noted 8,463 cases of missing persons between 2011 and January 2024, and at least 10,078 enforced disappearances were recorded by the Pakistan Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (COIED).

The killer doctrine of a thousand cuts by the Pakistan military, through terrorist attacks attempting to destabilize Jammu & Kashmir, is the key policy framework.

The world must act now. Political forced disappearances should be stopped, and these corrupt Pakistani generals should be blacklisted across the globe. Sanctions should be imposed so that a path to peace can be forged.
