Blue Quandong – The Only Fruit on Earth That Appears Blue With Zero Pigment

Scientists have confirmed that the blue quandong is the only fruit that looks truly blue even though it contains no blue pigment. This makes it different from fruits like blueberries or blue corn, which are actually purple or indigo.

Research published in Nature and PNAS shows that the fruit’s skin has extremely thin layers of cellulose arranged in tiny nanoscale patterns. These layers reflect only blue light, which is why the fruit appears bright metallic blue.

When scientists tried to remove “pigment” from the fruit, the sample turned grey — proving the colour is not caused by chemicals but by its special structure.

The shiny blue colour helps birds easily spot the fruit in dark rainforest environments, which helps spread its seeds.
