Massive X5.1 Solar Flare Sparks Radio Blackouts Across Europe and Africa
A powerful X5.1-class solar flare erupted from the Sun on November 11, disrupting radio communications across parts of Europe and Africa, according to Space.com. The blast, the strongest flare of 2025 and the most intense since October 2024, triggered a severe R3-level radio blackout and briefly cut off high-frequency signals on the sunlit side of Earth.
Experts warned that such powerful flares can interfere with satellite communications, GPS navigation, and even power grids.
Part of an Active Solar Region
The flare originated from sunspot AR4274, an unusually active region of the Sun that has unleashed several major flares in recent days. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) reported that these eruptions were accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) — massive bursts of plasma and magnetic fields — some of which could merge and strike Earth overnight.
If that happens, forecasters expect strong geomagnetic storms (rated G3) capable of producing brilliant auroras across northern latitudes.
Storm Watches Issued
In its Monday update, the SWPC said multiple CMEs were likely to impact Earth from November 11 through November 13, prompting a series of storm watches:
- G2 (Moderate) for November 11
- G3 (Strong) for November 12
- G1 (Minor) for November 13
“Analyses of these events continue due to the wide range of possible outcomes and how they might interact upon arrival at Earth,” the agency said, adding that there remains “a moderate level of uncertainty” in the forecast.

Scientists React to Rare Event
Solar physicist Steph Yardley described the flare activity as “not very common,” noting on X (formerly Twitter) that only 75 such powerful flares have been recorded since 1942.
Another space researcher, Jure Atanackov, highlighted the extraordinary speed of the CME, writing, “NASA’s M2M SWO estimates the CME speed at 1,856 km/s — a very fast CME! The animation in Cor2 data is absolutely spectacular. Big, fast CME, bulk headed for us.” He added that it could be “one of the most impressive near-side CMEs of this solar cycle.”

Understanding Solar Flares
Solar flares are categorized into five main classes — A, B, C, M, and X — ranked from weakest to most powerful. Each successive class represents roughly ten times the energy of the previous one. Within the X-class, the numbers indicate intensity, meaning an X5.1 flare is over five times stronger than an X1 event.
As scientists continue monitoring the Sun’s heightened activity, space weather forecasters say the coming days could bring not just disruptions — but also spectacular aurora displays for skywatchers across the northern hemisphere.
