“Weed Out the Fake Journalists”: After DIPR Verification Drive, LG Manoj Sinha Directs Officials for Mandatory Registration and Accountability of Online Media

A long-pending demand to dismantle yellow journalism in Jammu and Kashmir has gained renewed attention following two key developments. Chairing a high-level security meeting, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha directed officials to take strict action against individuals impersonating journalists and misusing journalistic identification.

According to reports, the LG has instructed authorities to ensure that only bonafide and recognized media professionals are engaged by government officials.

The issue of fake journalists was discussed during a recent review meeting in Srinagar, as well as in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly during its last session.

Officials have now been directed to act against those misusing the field of journalism, with SSPs and DCs asked to identify and weed out such elements. A district-wise database of verified and accredited journalists is being established to maintain transparency and authenticity in media representation.

It has also been clarified that individuals running Facebook pages, online news portals, or digital outlets must register with the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR). This move aims to ensure accountability, prevent misuse, and uphold the dignity of journalism in the Union Territory.

Amid growing complaints about unverified media activities, this directive is being viewed as a welcome and much-needed step to restore credibility in the profession.

Earlier, the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) had launched a verification exercise in Budgam to identify fake journalists and ensure that only legitimate and accredited media professionals operate in the field.

The move has received widespread public support, with citizens calling for strict action against self-styled and non-recognized individuals posing as journalists and misusing press credentials.
