21 Dead, Over 30 Missing After Landslide in Western Kenya
More than 30 people are missing, while 21 have lost their lives after a landslide triggered by heavy overnight rainfall in Marakwet East, in the western part of the country.
According to Kenya’s Interior Minister, the ongoing rainy season has caused severe flooding and landslides in the region, leading to the tragic loss of lives.
Sharing an update on X, Kipchumba Murkomen wrote:
“We have paused our search and rescue operations for today. We have confirmed the loss of 21 people to this tragedy, while over 30 people are still unaccounted for as reported by their families.
25 people with serious injuries have been airlifted to Eldoret for further medical attention, while others with minor injuries have been attended to locally.”
Murkomen further stated that the police, military, and other organisations, along with local community members, will join the rescue operations, which were halted last night due to poor conditions. He also urged residents living near seasonal rivers or in landslide-prone areas to move to safer ground immediately.

“We are working with utmost urgency to coordinate rescue efforts, extend humanitarian assistance, and stand with families affected by the Marakwet East landslide disaster,” the minister added.
The Kenya Red Cross shared aerial images showing the extent of destruction in Chesongoch, where heavy overnight rains triggered both landslides and flash floods.
The agency reported that extreme flooding has blocked access routes to several affected areas, making rescue and relief operations challenging. “Despite the difficult terrain, our teams are working tirelessly to reach those in need and tackle the situation,” the Kenya Red Cross said.
