Biggest Supermoon of the Year 2025 to Light Up the Sky on Wednesday Night
Skywatchers will be treated to a spectacular sight on Wednesday night as the largest and brightest supermoon of the year rises across the sky.
A supermoon occurs when the moon is at its fullest phase while also being closest to Earth in its orbit. Because the moon’s path around Earth is slightly oval, its distance varies throughout the month. When these two events coincide, the moon appears up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than when it’s farthest away, according to NASA.
This November event marks the second of three supermoons in 2025 and will also be the closest, coming within roughly 222,000 miles (357,000 kilometers) of Earth.
While the moon’s proximity may cause slightly higher tides, astronomers say the difference is minimal. “The change isn’t very noticeable,” explained Lawrence Wasserman of the Lowell Observatory.
No telescope or special gear is required to enjoy the view—just clear skies. However, experts note that the moon’s size difference can be hard to spot without comparing photographs or previous observations. “It’s easiest to see the contrast when you look at images of other full moons,” said Shannon Schmoll, director of Abrams Planetarium at Michigan State University.
Supermoons appear several times a year. The last one occurred in October, and another is expected in December, which will be the final supermoon of 2025.
