Pakistan Faces Acute Risk of Scarcity After India Suspends Indus Water Treaty: Report

After India suspended the Indus Water Treaty, reports suggest that Pakistan is facing a severe shortage in water supply. As Pakistan is heavily reliant on the Indus Basin, this suspension has created an acute risk of scarcity, stated the Ecological Threat Report 2025.

The report further states that since Pakistan lacks sufficient storage capacity to buffer variations, even a small disruption could have a massive impact on the country’s agricultural sector.

It also adds that Pakistan’s existence and survival depend on this basin. Not only will the agricultural sector be affected, but food security also faces a serious threat.

Whether it is the farming sector, agriculture, or other industries, all are heavily dependent on the basin. Nearly 80% of the population could face an existential threat if the situation persists.

Following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India has suspended the Indus Water Treaty and kept it in abeyance. India accuses Pakistan of harbouring terrorists and using them against India, for which it has reportedly presented evidence on the global stage as well.
