Following the Deadly Anti-Israel Protest, Pakistani Govt Bans Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan Under Anti-Terrorism Laws
Following the deadly anti-Israel protests, Pakistani authorities have banned the far-Islamist party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) near Lahore.
Though Pakistani authorities denied ongoing rumors of massive casualties, they stated that five people were killed during the violent protests near Lahore.
The political leadership and ruling alliance, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, gave the green signal to ban the party accused of leading some of the country’s most violent protests in recent years.
The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement saying that the federal cabinet had unanimously agreed on the involvement of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan in terrorism and other violent activities. The cabinet noted that the party’s rallies, processions, and violent acts had resulted in casualties.
The deadly protest broke out near Lahore’s Muridke area following the Israel-Hamas deal brokered by President Donald Trump. The protest was reportedly led by party chief Saad Rizvi, who has gone into hiding, said Punjab Government’s spokesperson Minister Uzma Bukhari.
In April 2021, after an anti-France protest turned deadly and several police officers were killed, a ban was imposed on the group. However, seven months later, the ban was lifted.
